All You Need To Know About AC Synchronous motors

Synchronous motor is the heart of power system, it is a combination of rotation and stationary, electromagnetic change and mechanical motion in one, to achieve the transformation of electrical and mechanical energy components.

 Its dynamic performance is very complex, and its dynamic performance and the dynamic performance of the whole power system has a great impact on the dynamic performance.

Features are: steady-state operation, there is a constant relationship between the rotor speed and grid frequency n=ns=60f/p, where f is the grid frequency, p is the number of pole pairs of the motor, ns is called synchronous speed.

How Do AC Synchronous motors Work?

  • The establishment of the main magnetic field: the excitation winding is passed with DC excitation current to establish the excitation magnetic field between the polarities, that is, the establishment of the main magnetic field.
  • Current-carrying conductor: The three symmetrical armature windings act as power windings and become the carrier of induced potential or induced current.
  • Cutting motion: the prime mover drags the rotor to rotate (mechanical energy input to the motor), the polarity interphase excitation magnetic field rotates with the shaft and cuts each phase of the stator winding in turn.
  • Alternating potential generation: due to the relative cutting motion between the armature winding and the main magnetic field, the armature winding will induce a three-phase symmetrical alternating potential that varies in size and direction according to the periodicity. Through the lead wire, you can provide AC power.
  • Alternating and symmetry: Due to the interphase polarity of the rotating magnetic field, the polarity of the induced potential is alternating; due to the symmetry of the armature winding, the three-phase symmetry of the induced potential is ensured.

How to choose synchronous motor or asynchronous motor?

① Synchronous motors are mostly used in large generators. Asynchronous motors, on the other hand, are used almost exclusively in electric motors. 

Synchronous motors can flexibly adjust the voltage and current phase on the input side through excitation, i.e. power factor; the power factor of asynchronous motors is not adjustable, generally between.

So in some large factories, asynchronous motors are used more often, a synchronous motor can be attached to do the regulator, which is used to adjust the power factor at the interface between the factory and the grid. 

However, due to the high cost of synchronous motor, maintenance workload, now generally use capacitor compensation power factor.

③ Asynchronous motors are simple, low cost, easy to install, use and maintain, so they are widely used. The disadvantage is low efficiency, low power factor is not good for the grid. 

And synchronous motor efficiency is high is capacitive load, can improve the power factor of the grid.

④ Synchronous machines need excitation voltage and current regulation, while asynchronous machines do not; synchronous machines can compensate reactive power to the system, while asynchronous machines need special equipment to increase power compensation.

② Synchronous motors are slightly more efficient than asynchronous motors, and when selecting motors above 2000KW, it is generally necessary to consider whether to use synchronous motors. 

However, synchronous machine needs higher level of operation workers to control excitation because of excitation winding and slip ring,

 in addition, the maintenance workload is larger than the maintenance-free of asynchronous motor; therefore, nowadays, most of the motors below 2500KW nowadays choose asynchronous motor. 

The difference of efficiency has become insignificant when the power is small.

⑤ There are three main ways to operate synchronous motors, namely as generators, motors and compensation machines. Running as a generator is the most important operation mode of synchronous motor, running as a motor is another important operation mode of synchronous motor. 

The power factor of synchronous motor can be adjusted, and the application of large synchronous motor can improve the operation efficiency in the occasion that speed regulation is not required. In recent years, small synchronous motors have been used more often in variable speed control systems.

 Synchronous motor can also be connected to the grid as a synchronous compensation machine. In this case, the motor does not carry any mechanical load, and relies on adjusting the excitation current in the rotor to send the required inductive or capacitive reactive power to the grid to improve the grid power factor or regulate the grid voltage. The asynchronous motor can be used as a drive for general applications.
